The 2019 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival has well and truly kicked off – it’s every fashionistas favourite time of year, as we get a glimpse into the creative world of designers and their new collections.
One of my personal favourites on the runway is Sydney-based label Ginger & Smart.
Since 2002 sisters Alexandra and Genevieve Smart have been delivering beautiful and captivating designs that are as much a favourite on the runway and they are on the streets and in closets all over Australia and the world.
Their commitment to combining beautiful fabrics with unique and inspired designs make them one of the most exciting designers to look out for with every new season – and this year is no exception.
I had the pleasure of having a chat with Alexandra and Genevieve ahead of the show to discuss what we can expect this year and what changes they have seen in the world of fashion ….
With VAMFF just around the corner, you must be getting so excited! What can you can you tell us about the upcoming collection?
VAMFF is always a great celebration of Australian Fashion. Our Chroma collection in the Harper’s Bazaar runway show is an expression of vibrant colour and graphic prints in modern contemporary silhouettes.
What was your inspiration when designing this collection?
The Chroma Code collection is inspired by the colour wheel, an abstract illustration of the spectrum around a circle, connected by line and shape. We loved the interplay of geometry to consciously create harmony.
Colour brings desire, sets a mood and makes a statement.
As a powerful form of communication, colour is irreplaceable.
There is definitely a shift when it comes to the fashion industry – we’re seeing far more diversity and inclusion. As designers, how important has this change been for you and is it something you think will continue to evolve?
Fashion is a powerful influence on cultural change. Designers more than ever in history are using their voice to bring awareness to important issues like diversity, inclusion and climate change. For us as designers influencing change for good is an important part of the work we do.
What is the must have trend for the and must have colour for 2019?
The greatest trend in fashion right now is that there really are no trends. Embrace all colour. Pairing unusual tones together like Shocking Pink and Rust has a very modern feel.
