Long-time readers of Coffees & Style will know that I have a shameless love affair with Italian culture—and more specifically, with Italian wine. So you can imagine my delight when I discovered Bottega Italia, a brand built entirely around celebrating the depth, diversity, and quiet excellence of Italy’s winemaking tradition.
Bottega Italia was created from a simple belief: great wine should be a pleasure to discover, not a challenge to choose. Born from a deep personal connection with Italy and its winemaking traditions, we exist to bring exceptional Italian wines to Australia carefully curated, personally tasted, and delivered with ease.
Rather than overwhelming you with endless options, we focus on a refined selection of outstanding wines across regions, styles, and price points. Each wine is chosen because it offers something special authentic character, exceptional quality, and genuine enjoyment. Every bottle has a story, every wine has earned its place, and every choice is designed to make enjoying Italian wine effortless, memorable, and deeply rewarding.
I sat down with the owners David and Sylvia, to talk about their journey through Italy’s wine regions, their uncompromising approach to selection, and the stories behind the bottles they choose to share.
How would you describe Bottega Italia to someone discovering the brand for the first time?
Bottega Italia is an online store focused on easy selection and fast delivery of some of the best Italian wines.
We decided from the very beginning that we should stay focused on only Italian wines and that we should only offer a small selection of the best quality wines across a range of price points. We want our customers to easily find a wine that they will enjoy and to not be overwhelmed by a huge choice of wines that they might not be interested in.
What was the starting point for Bottega Italia, and what gap were you looking to fill?
We decided to launch Bottega Italia because we had recently discovered for ourselves how amazing Italian wines can be. We travelled to Italy in 2016 and visited a winery where the winemaker himself passionately described the knowledge and attention to detail which goes into every wine he makes. Then we tasted the wines…..OMG, at that moment I felt like I had never tasted wines before.
That was the beginning of our journey of discovery for Italian wines. When we launched in 2022, we had developed an intimate knowledge of Italian wines and wanted to share that here in Australia but to also make it easy for our customers to choose.
How do you select the wines and producers you work with?
Some of our wines we import directly from the producer after meeting with them and choosing the wines ourselves. Other wines we work closely with the importers here in Australia to ensure a smooth and reliable supply chain. But in every case, we actually taste all the wines before offering them for sale.
What defines the Bottega Italia range, beyond grape variety or region?
The single thing that defines our range is that each wine is enjoyable and is the best quality available.
We have in fact tasted some wines that we rejected and would not offer in our store because they were either very “ordinary tasting” or in some cases the importer simply hadn’t stored them correctly (resulting in unpleasant aromas and flavours).
Who do you see as your customer, and how are they most likely to enjoy your wines?
Our customers are people who are looking for quality, great value for money, and something which is a little special.
How do you see Bottega Italia fitting into everyday life rather than just special occasions?
Whilst many wines will fill your mouth with a full flavour which quickly disappears after just a few sips, and with aromas that are bland or barely present, Italian wines have a longer lasting and a more complex range of flavours and aromas that can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace.
Our wines offer an incredible quality of complex flavours and aromas which will endure right to the very last drop making them perfect for a broad range of occasions such as a sunny BBQ lunch, a quiet wintery afternoon at home, a celebratory dinner with family and friends or a romantic dinner for two.
