Italian wine has a way of saying what words sometimes can’t. Rooted in centuries of tradition and crafted with patience, passion, and care, it speaks of celebration, generosity, and connection, making it one of the most meaningful gifts you can give.
As someone who genuinely loves Italian wine, I’ve always been drawn to its sense of depth and romance: wines shaped by history, place, and the people who make them. That’s something Bottega Italia understands instinctively. When it comes to gifting, their approach mirrors the philosophy behind their entire range—quality over quantity, beauty with substance, and bottles that feel truly special.
I sat down with the team at Bottega Italia to talk about the wines most often chosen as gifts, how they guide customers through different occasions, and why some bottles are opened the night they’re given, while others are saved and treasured for years to come.
Which wines do you most often see chosen as gifts, and why?
Bottega Gold prosecco is very popular. With its beautiful gold appearance and 38 international awards, it’s the easy choice for special celebrations.
The Dolce & Gabbana collection from Donna Fugata wines is a truly beautiful gift idea which is popular for Mother’s Day
Ferrari sparkling wines are popular for Father’s Day, significant birthdays, retirement parties etc
The Stefano Accordini Amarone wine with the unique wooden gift box is popular as a very special ‘one of kind’ gift.
When people are buying wine for different occasions, how do you tend to organise or suggest the selection?
There are many considerations for choosing a wine and your decision is often based on the meal that you will be having with the wine.
Whites tend to be fresh and young with lighter flavours and aromas, while Reds tend to have fuller flavours and often go through an aging process before being bottled.
If your pairing wine with the food, then Whites will generally go better with lighter foods while Reds will pair better with heavier hearty meals. But a noticeable exception is that sparkling wines pair better with spicey foods since they tend to cleanse the palate.
Those wanting to explore further can refer to a short piece on food and wine pairings from the Bottega Italia team here, and a separate guide to the 10 best Italian red and white wines here.
Which wines are typically opened on the night they’re given, and which are more often kept?
If you’re buying as a gift, keep in mind that Reds generally improve with age and can be stored for years, while Whites are generally best when they are young.
For weddings and engagements, which wines are most frequently selected?
Definitely a sparkling wine is for celebrations! Bottega Gold is a great way to jazz up the table and serve for the all important toast.
We are fast approaching Valentine’s Day, which styles or wines tend to be favoured?
