There are some shows that stay with you long before you truly appreciate why.
Fiddler on the Roof has always held a special place in my heart. Long before I had the privilege of covering opening nights and sharing Melbourne’s theatre scene, I was a very enthusiastic (and probably slightly over-the-top) Yente in my high school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. Of all the roles, somehow the village matchmaker was the one I landed, and I absolutely loved every minute of it.
So you can imagine how excited I was to hear this acclaimed London production is finally making its way to Australia. Led by Troy Sussman as Tevye, with John Waters, Sigrid Thornton and Alexis Fishman among the cast.
The production also features internationally acclaimed violinist Ben Adler in the iconic role of The Fiddler, a leading figure in Australia’s Jewish music community.
Since first premiering more than 60 years ago, Fiddler on the Roof has become one of the world’s most beloved musicals.
Beneath the unforgettable music, humour and heart is a deeply human story about family, faith, tradition and what it means to hold onto your identity while the world around you changes. Those themes have allowed the show to resonate with generation after generation and feel just as powerful today.
Some stories stay with you for a lifetime. I have a feeling this production will be no exception.
As Tevye reminds us, “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as… a fiddler on the roof.” ????
